Starry Oaks (SO) is 5 acres of Post Oak Savannah located about 15 miles south of Bastrop. Starry Oaks came from the taxonomic name of Post oak which is Quercus stellata (star oak), and the view of the stars through the branches at night. Nights are dark and full of stars. SO is a rolling land with outcrops of red/orange soil and many ironstone rocks and boulders. Besides the oaks the dominant vegetation is American Beauty Berry, Farkleberry, Little Bluestem and Switch Grass. Also, too many Yaupons, and a greatly reduced number of Eastern Red Cedar (Juniper). The property was untouched by the Great Bastrop Fire of 2011, but still recovering from long drought conditions.
